Caroline Junqueira, PhD, will join the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) starting 1 August 2023. With her arrival, the IRB will have a new Group Leader who will develop her research programme in the field of immunology and infectious diseases, a central topic of IRB research. This will further strengthen the Bellinzona biomedical cluster that is developing around the Bellinzona Institutes of Science Association (Bios+).

The Foundation for the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) is pleased to announce that a new research group, led by Dr. Junqueira, will begin its activities at the IRB in Bellinzona, an institute affiliated with Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), on 1 August. Dr. Junqueira, currently active as Senior Researcher at Boston Children's Hospital of Harvard Medical School (United States), as well as Associate Professor at the Renê Rachou Institute in Fiocruz Minas (Brazil), is an expert in the field of human immune response to infectious diseases.

Dr. Junqueira has already authored numerous scientific publications in leading international journals in the field of biomedicine. Brazilian-born, she was selected out of 99 applicants from around the world in response to an international call issued last September. After an initial selection, in which the eight best candidates presented their work and research programme to the Bios+ community, the IRB Foundation's final choice fell on Dr. Junqueira, because of her accomplishments to date and because her research complements, both in terms of topics and technological knowledge, the programme of other groups active at the IRB.
