Institutional Communication Service
16 February 2024
Sergio Mantegazza, an honorary member of our University, died on 13 February at 96. He firmly believed in our institution and generously supported it. The academic community of USI is deeply grateful for his contributions and expresses its sympathy to his family.
Through the Metis Fondazione Sergio Mantegazza, Sergio Mantegazza contributed in particular to the establishment within the Faculty of Informatics, in 2010, of the then Institute of Computational Sciences, funding the professorship of Prof. Michele Parrinello, who was awarded the Benoist Prize (the Swiss 'Nobel Prize') the following year. Additionally, his support was vital in the development of computational cardiology research, particularly in the Centre for Computational Medicine in Cardiology activities, which is a collaboration between USI and Cardiocentro Ticino.
In 2016, Sergio Mantegazza was appointed Honorary Member of USI on the occasion of its 20th Dies academicus, "in recognition of his decisive and generous support to the development of computational sciences at Università della Svizzera italiana".
