Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Postdoc.Mobility is aimed at researchers who have a PhD and want to acquire more in-depth knowledge, increase their scientific independence and enhance their research profile with a research stay at a university or research institution abroad. Multiple host institutions are allowed.

During their stay abroad, fellowship holders can apply for a return grant to finance their salary for 3-12 months back in Switzerland.

Eligibility

You can apply as early as 9 months prior the PhD/MD defense and up until 3 years after your PhD/MD defense. Non-Swiss applicants must have worked at a research institution in CH for at least 2 years and have a valid residence permit.

Funding and duration(abroad phase)

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Eligible costs:
    • Living allowance according to the subsidence costs of the host country (min. 44’000 CHF per year, max 62’00 CHF per year);
    • Travel allowance to reach the host institution(s) abroad and to travel back to CH according to SNSF flat rates.
      • Travel costs, according to the SNSF flat rate, can be claimed 100% for the partner and 75%, if they stay abroad with the grantee for at least 6 months
    • Research funds up to CHF 5’000 per year
      • Travel costs connected to field studies or visits to archives as well as costs for overnight stays.
      • Conference costs: registration fees for conferences, outward and return journey, accommodation and meals.
      • Other costs: library fees, photocopies in libraries or archives, transcription costs of interviews, documentation, expendable items, computing time and cloud computing.
    • Yearly child allowance of CHF 12’000 per accompanying child. The child must live abroad with the fellowship holder for min. 6 months.

A no-cost extension of the project can be requested just in case of delays of at least two months due to maternity, paternity, parental or adoption leave, responsibilities as a carer, incapacity to work through illness or accident, military and civilian service.

Duration: 3 – 12 months at a Swiss host intitution

  • Eligible costs
    • Salary of the fellowship holder with social security contributions (min. employment rate: 80%)
    • CHF 5’000 research and conference costs per year
