The USI Academic Senate also includes representatives from the university administrative staff, i.e. administrative services staff, librarians, technicians and auxiliary staff. We present the experience of Mauro Prevostini, Programme Manager at the USI Faculty of Informatics and administrative staff member.
Mauro Prevostini, what was the most enriching aspect of your experience as a representative of the administrative staff within the Academic Senate?
"I am incredibly proud to have been elected by my colleagues in the administrative staff. Their trust in me brings me great happiness, and I want to express my gratitude for this opportunity. The interactions during our sessions with professors, researchers, and students have been and continue to be a rewarding experience that broadens my horizons, enriches my knowledge, and allows me to contribute to academic dialogue actively. This experience stimulates personal and professional growth and strengthens my sense of belonging to the university community."
How does the involvement of administrative staff in the Senate enhance the quality of life at USI and improve the functioning of the University?
"The presence of administrative staff in the Senate adds significant value to the effective functioning of USI. Our contributions provide a perspective that complements those of the professors, researchers, and students, leading to a more complete and integrated approach to the University's strategic decisions. I believe the dialogue among these four groups—administrative staff, faculty, researchers, and students—within a governing body like the Senate fosters continuous improvement and promotes harmonious growth throughout the entire institution."
What are the main challenges in ensuring that the voice of administrative staff is heard and taken into account?
"To ensure that the voice of administrative staff is heard and valued, it is essential to be actively involved in the Senate committees. It is precisely within these working groups that we can propose relevant issues and make a concrete contribution to the evolution of the University. Participating in these discussions means having the opportunity to constructively influence decisions, bringing to attention crucial aspects that deserve further investigation and intervention, always to improve the well-being and efficiency of USI."
Which current issues or projects in the Senate are relevant for administrative staff, particularly with future considerations in mind?
"In my opinion, the most important issues for the administrative staff—now and for the future—are related to innovation, maintaining the quality of academic programmes and services, and ensuring close ties with the region, all while focusing on effective financial management. I believe these factors are essential for ensuring a strong and effective university that can meet the challenges of the international academic landscape. Constant attention to these areas ensures a responsible management of resources and a stimulating and dynamic work environment for all members of the university community."
