On Tuesday, 14 October, at 5:30 pm, the Auditorium of Università della Svizzera italiana (West Campus, Lugano) will host a screening of the film Khartoum (2025). This international co-production weaves together narratives of daily life in Sudan set against a backdrop of conflict. The event is organised by the International Relations and Study Abroad Service and the Equal Opportunities Service at USI, in collaboration with the Lugano Human Rights Film Festival.

Khartoum, directed by Anas Saeed, Rawia Alhag, Ibrahim Snoopy and Timeea M. Ahmed, tells the story of five lives and five perspectives: a civil servant, a tea seller, a volunteer with a resistance committee and two street children. Through these interconnected narratives, the film, presented in its original version with Italian and English subtitles, explores the complexities of the quest for freedom in a country afflicted by shattered dreams, street revolutions, and war.

The initiative is part of "Il mondo in USI" and offers an opportunity to reflect on human rights issues, linking local and international experiences.

The screening will be followed by a discussion (in Italian and English) with:

  • Jolanta Drzewiecka, Professor and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society, Vice-Director of the Institute of Communication and Public Policy (ICPP)
  • Kevin Ben Lee, Professor at the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society, Locarno Film Festival Professor for the Future of Cinema and the Audiovisual Arts

The discussion will be moderated by Vega Tescari, lecturer at the Academy of Architecture and the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society.

At the end of the encounter, participants are invited to an aperitif offered in collaboration with Umamy. Participation is free of charge. Please register using the online form.

The Lugano Human Rights Film Festival (FFDUL), established in 2014, is the primary platform for human rights discussions in Southern Switzerland and the first film festival in the region entirely focused on these critical issues.
