The ITERSS project (Inclusive Tertiary Education for Refugees in Southern Switzerland), a collaboration between USI's International Relations and Mobility Office and SUPSI's International Office, has been selected by swissuniversities under the second call of the "Equity – Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion at all levels of higher education" programme for 2025–2028. The two cantonal institutions are pooling their expertise and services to promote access to tertiary education for individuals with a refugee background in Southern Switzerland. Franklin University Switzerland joins as an external partner, contributing to the exchange of best practices and through activities dedicated to personal growth. The project also falls within USI's "third mandate" and SUPSI's "third mission," actively contributing to both institutions' commitment to societal dialogue, social inclusion, and the development of initiatives with a direct local impact.
At the core of the ITERSS project is the development of a shared model that systematically integrates language support, preparatory pathways, and academic mentoring. These tools are designed to address the specific challenges participants face, enabling them to realise their full potential. The initiative intends to support more equitable access to study for those seeking refuge in Switzerland, leveraging synergies between the two institutions and enhancing orientation services through structured collaboration with relevant cantonal departments.
During the three-year funding period, activities will focus on consolidating preparatory courses and academic support tools, while also integrating awareness-raising sessions for academic and administrative staff on themes of inclusivity.
Planned actions include Italian language courses, digital skills development, learning coaching services, the distribution of multilingual information materials, and initiatives to encourage participation in university life. These actions also enhance the international dimension of the institutions, fostering an inclusive and intercultural university environment. Furthermore, the project includes a feasibility study to define continuing education proposals for refugees with qualified professional backgrounds, improving their career prospects and strengthening the project's sustainability beyond initial training.
ITERSS represents a shared challenge that promotes an inclusive approach to tertiary education, supporting a university system that is more open, accessible, and able to represent the diverse paths and experiences that characterise contemporary society.
