Funding programme supporting high-quality, curiosity-driven research projects in quantum science and technology. Projects must demonstrate scientific excellence and articulate a meaningful impact beyond academia, contributing to the Swiss quantum research and innovation ecosystem. Areas include quantum communication, computation, simulation, sensing/metrology, and enabling technologies.

Eligibility

Applicants must be affiliated with an eligible Swiss research institution. Researchers must be able to conduct research independently and lead project staff. Eligibility includes: (i) doctorate obtained within the last 4 years, or equivalent research experience; (ii) employment (or written assurance thereof) at an SNSF-eligible institution for the project duration; (iii) access to required infrastructure. Collaborative projects are allowed; one foreign applicant may participate in projects with ≥3 applicants if essential expertise is demonstrated. Only one application per applicant. Early-career researchers are explicitly encouraged.

Funding and duration

Total call budget: CHF 16 million (subject to confirmation). Grants last 1–4 years. Minimum request: CHF 100,000. Maximum average funding: CHF 250,000 per applicant per year. Collaborative projects with ≥3 applicants may request up to CHF 3 million. Equipment costs up to CHF 400,000 per project are eligible.
Timeline of the call

  • Call opens: 2026
  • Submission deadline: 1 September 2026.
  • Evaluation: International peer review + evaluation panel review following submission.
  • Funding decision: SNSF Programme Committee TSOR based on expert recommendations.
  • Earliest project start date: 1 April 2027.
  • Reporting: output data due within 18 months of project start; final report at project end
