The new publication “The border and maps” by the Osservatorio dello sviluppo territoriale (Observatory of local development) at USI Academy of Architecture is a treasure trove of data and maps useful to understand the situation in Ticino and its cross-border relationships. The maps show how the sociodemographic and socioeconomic phenomenon evolved through time, sparking interesting discussions on the appeal of metropolitan areas, migration, ageing of the population, financial activities and cross-border workers. The publication is free and available at http://www.arc.usi.ch/it/ricerca-e-istituti/istituti/ost/quaderni.

La frontiera e le mappe. Evidenze demografiche e socioeconomiche tra Svizzera e Italia, 2010-2014” (The border and maps. Demographics and socioeconomics facts between Switzerland and Italy, 2010-2014) is a new publication by the Osservatorio dello sviluppo territoriale (Observatory of local development) at USI Academy of Architecture carried out on behalf of the Sezione dello sviluppo territoriale (SST, Dipartimento del territorio, Bellinzona).

The publication aims at sharing information on the sociodemographic and socioeconomic development and at observing both situations of the Swiss and the Northern Italian and Insubric Region during the first part of the last decade (2010-2014).

It is in fact, a small cross-border atlas, entirely renewed on a scientific, technological and graphic level. Chances are that this work has been published 20 years after the publication of the Atlante socioeconomico della Regione insubrica (The Socio-Economic Atlas of the Insubric Region), (Torricelli G.P, Thiede L. e Scaramellini G., 1997, Atlante socioeconomico della regione insubrica, Edizioni Casagrande, Bellinzona).
