Dicronis is the winner of the StartCup Ticino 2017, the competition that awards the most innovative and promising business ideas realized in Ticino - an initiative of the USI-SUPSI Start-Up Promotion Center (CP Start-UP), supported by the Department of Finances and Economy of the Canton Ticino, EFG bank, and the AGIRE Foundation.
On Wednesday, December 6, at the Lugano campus aula magna, over 300 people attended the final event at which Dicronis came in first place, followed by the other four finalists, earning a cash prize of 50,000 CHF and a full scholarship worth 45,000 offered by USI Executive MBA. EXead came in second place, winning a cash prize of 30,000 CHF; BigOmics was ranked third with a 20,000 CHF prize; and Modula and Swissponic, ranked forth and fifth respectively, won 10,000 CHF each.
Earlier in the afternoon, at the USI Lugano campus Auditorium, the five finalists pitched their projects to potential investors at the Swiss Venture Day Ticino, organised by CP Start-Up USI-SUPSI together with Swiss Startup Invest (previously CTI Invest). In addition, all five finalists will be admitted directly to the second phase of the SwissEconomic Award, the prestigious competition that rewards the best start-ups in Switzerland.
Dicronis develops innovative pharmaceutical products for the early diagnosis of diseases with high and urgent medical needs. The first product, Lymphit, is a so-called activity tracker that controls the function of the lymphatic system in a simple, safe and economical way, even from home. In particular, Lymphit contributes to drastically reducing, in combination with a specific treatment, the development of lymphoedema, a serious side effect of certain cancer therapies, to which up to one million patients are at risk annually, in Europe alone.
Dicronis was also the winning project of the MedTech Business 2017 Award, conferred during the MedTech Business Comprehensive Advanced Program on MedTech Entrepreneurship at USI (www.medtechbusiness.usi.ch/index.htm), held at the Lugano campus from November 27 to December 1, 2017.
The other finalists:
EXead develops oral vaccines for the prevention of gastrointestinal infectious diseases, with the aim of addressing the currently unresolved medical needs with high patient accessibility.
BigOmics is a cloud platform for Big Data analysis in the field of next generation genomics. The objective of the system is to democratize the analysis of omics data to accelerate medical discoveries and diagnostic processes, thus treating diseases.
The Modula bio-marker, a small electronic device that collects information on health in human beings, enables to accurately diagnose vector-borne diseases such as, for example, ticks (Lyme morbum), thus facilitating hospital care processes.
Swissponic has developed a system for automated hydroponics cultivation, allowing to grow vegetables without pesticides at home, throughout the year. The innovative monitoring system is equipped with sensors and regulators to provide the ideal environment for plant growth. Swissponic also provides a cloud platform which allows to control and manage the cultivation remotely.
