The 71st Locarno Festival offers many side events related to the world of cinematography, such as the Locarno Talks la Mobiliare, which this year will explore the evolving nature of images in order to consider how they might affect our everyday lives in the years ahead. For instance, will artificial intelligence one day define what we consider beautiful?

“NOW – the best place to change the future”, is the title of the second edition of the Locarno Talks la Mobiliare, which will feature, at the Spazio Cinema on Friday, August 10, at 11AM, Jürgen Schmidhuber, Full professor at the USI Faculty of Informatics and Co-scientific director at the USI-SUPSI Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA), who will explain how art and science are driven by the same basic principles, and how his Formal Theory of Creativity, Fun, and Intrinsic Motivation allows for “building” artificial scientists and artists.

Since the age of 15, the main goal of Prof. Schmidhuber has been to build a self-improving Artificial Intelligence (AI) smarter than himself, then retire. He is often considered one of the fathers of AI. His lab's deep learning neural networks such as LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) have revolutionized machine learning, are now on 3 billion smartphones, and used billions of times per day, for Facebook's automatic translation, Google's speech recognition, Apple's Siri & QuickType, Amazon's Alexa, etc. He is recipient of numerous awards, and president of the company NNAISENSE, which aims at building the first practical general purpose AI.
