After spending the past summer in the Lugano city centre, from the beginning of September the five-metre “Cactus” has found a new home at the Lugano campus. The original large-sized pop installation in fluorescent colors, which was created by CLAB (Creative Laboratory of the City of Lugano) in collaboration with the CSIA (School of Artistic Industries) and with AUL (Lugano Urban Art), was the mascot of the Longlake Festival. The cactus will be on display near the aula magna and the Informatics building until November 6, 2018.

The installation also has a symbolic value: the cactaceae, more commonly called cactus, are easily identifiable plants with an incredible ability to adapt, and for this reason they commonly symbolize perseverance, a characteristic that can prove very useful also during the challenging years of academic studies.

In addition to considering this symbolic characteristic as an encouragement for the opening of the new academic year, students are already using the giant installation as a backdrop for photographs that are then posted on social media with the hashtags #CactusLugano and #USILife.

Università della Svizzera italiana thanks the City of Lugano for this opportunity to add an extra touch of color to its campus.
