The Lugano MedTech project, which aims at creating a centre for medical technologies at the Mizar building located north of the Lugano campus, has made significant progress. On Thursday, December 6, the City of Lugano, the Cardiocentro Ticino Foundation and USI met to examine the situation and define together the next steps.

The priority has been set on developing a global concept of innovation that fosters and enables the creation of a range of activities, some already identified and some to be defined, with the inclusion of all the forces active in the medtech sector. The program will be defined jointly by the Medtech Foundation and the Agire Foundation (the Rector of USI sits on both Boards). The second agreed step concerns the updating – through a technical committee – of the business plan of the Medtech Foundation itself (originally drafted in 2016), in view of the development of activities within the Mizar building.

According to Boas Erez, Rector of USI: "We have identified an overall framework for medtech research at the Cantonal level, where the role of USI will be to act as a liaison". In addition to the Agire Foundation, the project will also involve the EOC Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (the Cantonal hospital authority), SUPSI (the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland) and the companies operating in the medtech sector in the region.
