English language courses

The Laboratory of Modern Languages offers English language courses from level B1 to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Each course aims to develop comprehension and production skills, both oral and written.

  • Why is it important to learn English?

    • In the Bachelor's programmes, English B2+ is a requirement in many study tracks (Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society, Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Theology in Lugano);
    • An excellent knowledge of English is essential for successfully completing a Master's degree programme;
    • The LLM offers free courses for the entire USI community up to C1 level;
    • It is often a requirement for USI's Exchange programmes;
    • English is the lingua franca of science and research;
    • Knowledge of the language is a requirement for admission to most universities;
    • A good knowledge of English broadens study and career opportunities in Switzerland and abroad.
  • ECTS credits

    Some study programmes (Bachelor’s and Master’s) allow students to earn ECTS credits if the following conditions are met:

    • attending at least 75% of the classes for national languages (French, Italian, German) or at least 80% for English

    • passing the final test of the chosen language course.

  • Linguistic official certification of the English language

    To graduate with a Bachelor's degree from the Faculties of Communication and Economics, students are required to achieve a specified level of English proficiency (B2 and/or B2+). USI accepts official IELTS, Cambridge English, TOEFL, and TOEIC certifications to fulfill this language requirement.
