In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Omar Elabed, Frontend Developer for Tamedia in Zurich (CH). USI Degree: Bachelor in Informatics, 2014.

How did you start your career?

I started out in a small company near Lugano. After some freelancing and working at SUPSI, I landed my first job in Zurich.

Why did you choose a career at Tamedia?

Besides all the good perks at a big company, it's actually my new team the most convincing factor to accept this last job.

What is your current role/duties?

I'm the only developer in my team. I take care of everything tech here, making sure all ads run well on the main Tamedia marketplaces (tutti.ch, ricardo.ch, homegate…).

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Tamedia?

Knowing people, how to interact with them and how to contribute are crucial beside being good at your hard skills.

What are USI’s positive featuresand qualities?

USI is a small melting pot of cultures and mindsets from all over the world.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Practice oriented exercises and the direct and continuous interaction with students and professors, were crucial to the quality of my curriculum at USI.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Don't look just for a good match with your skill set, but look at the people and the culture behind the projects. This is crucial if you want to add value in your area of work.
