In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Cecilia Aquila, CFO for Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino in Lugano (CH). USI Degrees: Bachelor in Economics, 2010, Master in Banking and Finance, 2012 and PhD in Economics, 2018.

How did you start your career?

I got in touch with Cardiocentro Ticino during the Career Forum in 2009, as their Angel. That led to a first internship followed by many others.

Why did you choose a career at Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino?

Because Cardiocentro Ticino is a highly specialised center associated with the University of Zurich, where I found a strong management department and it allowed me to implement many managerial instruments and financial knowledge I learned at USI.

What is your current role/duties?

As CFO, I direct and oversee all aspects of the Finance, Accounting and Controlling functions of the organisation and provide continuous financial monitoring in order to ensure financial stability.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino?

Solid technical and analytical skills, integrity, flexibility, humility, constructiveness and foreign languages knowledge.

What are USI’s positive featuresand qualities?

Great faculty, a dimension allowing close relationships between Professors and students, supportive organisation and great integration in the Ticino Canton.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Analytical and technical skills; quantitative approach for problem solving; teamwork; training to long working hours, fatigue and stress management.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Be humble and willing to learn everyday from everyone.
