In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Geo Medolago, Group Communication Specialist at Helsinn in Lugano. USI Degrees: Master in Communication, Management and Health, 2015 and Bachelor in Economics, 2013.

How did you start your career?

I started my career while doing the field project, where I heard from our project leader of a position at the International Osteoporosis Foundation and decided to apply. In a few months, I was there doing my internship in communications.

Why did you choose a career in Helsinn?

I chose to join Helsinn as it's an international pharmaceutical company in Ticino. Helsinn is very committed to its employees' benefits and wellness and it's a great company to work for.

What is your current role/duties?

As Group Communication Specialist, I manage all communication activities within the Group. This entails website, press releases, internal news, social media, developing the communication strategy and planning, and project management.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in Helsinn?

Teamwork, communication, being proactive.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

USI taught me how to methodically frame, address, and solve problems. Further, thanks to its relationships, USI facilitated entering the job market.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Understanding different cultures, applying various methods. Moreover, the MCMH program gave me good insight into the health sector.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Positive, can-do attitude, never give up and always reinvent yourself.
