In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Carlotta Lamura, Digital Strategy Consultant for IBM in Milan. USI Degree: Master of Science in Cognitive Psychology in Health Communication, 2019.

How did you start your career?

During my last year at USI I started an internship in the healthcare field at Gruppo San Donato, assisting the Chief Digital Officer as a project manager trainee. Thanks to this opportunity, I have gained a great interest for digital transformation projects and some valuable knowledge in carry out projects in complex environments. After almost one year, I have been hired by IBM where I work as a digital strategy consultant.

Why did you choose a career in IBM?

I decided to work at IBM because it is a pioneer of technology and innovation and I considered it as one of the best place to learn and grow professionally.

What is your current role/duties?

As a digital strategy consultant I work on different projects to help clients address complex challenges by integrating strategy, processes, technology and information to improve their performance and create a sustainable competitive advantage.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in IBM?

If you are people-oriented, you like to shape your path, face challenges and get out of the routine for a while, then you are on the right track with IBM.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

The university offers a great multicultural environment and a multidisciplinary approach. I really appreciated the proposed field projects and the constant interaction that students can have with their professors.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

USI offers some practical experiences and a lot of chances to increase presentations skills which are two really helpful elements when approaching the job market. I also appreciated the flexible curricula proposed by the university. My joint degree study program, in collaboration with Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, allowed me to study between two countries and acquiring competences in a wide range of subjects, from cognitive psychology to corporate strategy.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

My advice would be to be ambitious and never stop learning. I would encourage to experiment as much as possible and keep a positive approach. This could help you find the job that best suits your needs.
