In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Thomas Mampilly, Global Product Lead in EY in Zurich (CH). USI Degree: Master in Management, 2009.
How did you start your career?
I started my career as an intern in Sales Management at IBM Switzerland. I moved within the organisation, learning various businesses like Hardware, Software, Consulting, Business Partners etc. IBM gave me a strong foundation in Sales Management, Transformative Leadership, Analytical Thinking and Solution-oriented approach. I then pursued my career in Product Management and joined UBS Asset Management AG in Switzerland in 2015, where I was appointed as Director of CRM solutions. This role gave me exposure to Product Management, including the journey from Waterfall to Agile. In 2019, the Chief Technology Officer - Client Technology Consulting reached out to me to join Ernst & Young, where I was appointed as Global Head of Business Management and was part of the leadership team driving product and business management transformation for Consulting. This was a crucial step as I took over a global product and currently, inspiring a team of 55 to collaborate and develop a global product addressing cross-industry challenges across all service lines of Ernst & Young.
Why did you choose a career in EY?
I always wanted to be in a management role within the Technology industry. Product Management gives me the best of both worlds Management and Technology.
What is your current role/duties?
I am a Global Product Lead, I am accountable for the product vision, strategy and development. I work closely with the consulting team that sells/leverages this product to help clients to stay relevant with international standards, uncover gaps to compete and win in the market.
In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in EY?
I think it is hard to limit the qualities, but in my opinion i would say the following:
- Personal Well-being: Sustain positive energy & fuel resilience
- Curiosity: Leads with questions and continuous learning
- Inspiring: leverages story-telling and rallies others with passion & purpose
- Network: Build trust and enrich relationships
- Progressive and innovative: Adopts new technologies, data and partners across the ecosystem. Harness diverse thinking, experiment, create new solutions tomaximize/improve existing solutions.
What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?
Approachable and supportive faculty & staff. Diverse backgrounds of students. International Masters curriculum and Faulty. Excellent network with companies. My all time favourite was the student activities.
What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?
Inclusiveness. Especially during course work or Field study, having a diverse group makes it more fun and no shortage of creative ideas. We learn how to play to our strengths in the group. This is exactly what you need especially when you work in an international organization. Diversity and inclusiveness is a major topic for all big firms, especially when your team is global.
What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?
- Network! Meeting people sharing experiences and stories are the best way to build trust and enrich relationships
- Learn! This is a continuous process to keep yourself up-to-date, whether it is a badge concept in acompany, linkedIn, Udemy etc.
- Your hobby! Create work/life balance. This makes you interesting, don't be always about work!
