Léna Pellandini-Simányi, Associate professor at the USI Institute of Marketing and Communication Management (IMCA, Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society), was appointed in September 2021 as coordinator of the Research Committee on Economic Sociology, a unit of the Swiss Sociological Association. This prestigious appointment confirms the relevance of the sociological approach that the Faculty promotes in research and training, and strengthens the relations among scholars and faculty in this discipline at USI and other universities in Switzerland.

"Academic research is quite a solitary activity; however, when done in the ‘company’ of fellow researchers it becomes one of the most rewarding intellectual experiences. These networks provide this company that is essential both for good research and for the dialogs that make academia fun", says Prof. Pellandini-Simányi.

At USI, many institutes use a sociological approach, which is reflected also in the name of the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society. Economic sociology, in particular, is one of key theoretical sources for organisation theory, critical marketing and consumer culture theory, which are researched at the Institute of Marketing and Communication Management (IMCA) and at other institutes, such as the Institute of Management and Organization (IMO).

The Research Committee on Economic Sociology, a unit of the Swiss Sociological Association (SGS-SSS) was founded in 2000 and meets annually. Its main topics of analysis are the sociology of economic theory (growth theory, political economy, business cycles), the sociology of markets, management, innovation, training, employment, work organisation, pressure groups, the social security system, the process of internationalisation and globalisation, and problems of exclusion.
