On 23 November 2022 in Paris, ESA presented its new team of astronauts. It includes Swiss Marc Alain Sieber, who was selected from more than 22,000 applicants as one of the next ESA astronauts, the first since Claude Nicollier repaired the Hubble in the 1999 spacewalk.

The Università della Svizzera italiana, a partner of the Space Exchange Switzerland (SXS) consortium, joins in the celebrations for the selection of the new astronaut, who we hope will be an inspiration to Swiss students and graduates wishing to pursue a career in space.

Marco Sieber has a degree in emergency medicine and is a parachutist and pilot. He graduated from the Gymnasium Burgdorf in Switzerland in 2007. In 2009, he joined paratrooper training with the Swiss Special Forces Command in the Swiss Army, where he achieved the military rank of Sergeant. In 2015, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 2021, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Preclinical Emergency and Rescue Medicine (SGNOR).
