It is a historic success for Università della Svizzera italiana: all 47 students who completed the first edition of USI Master of Medicine have also successfully passed the federal examination, licensing them to practice medicine.

The Federal Medical Examination took place on 8 and 10 August 2023 (written MC examination) and on 4 September 2023 (practical OSCE examination) at the East Campus Lugano and, at the same time, at the other Swiss universities (https://www.usi.ch/it/feeds/25547). As a part of the theoretical examination, the students were required to answer 300 multiple-choice questions and handle clinical cases that were set by a special federal commission. This was done to ensure impartiality in the results. The results of the federal examination have been announced recently, and all the candidates from USI's Master of Medicine programme have achieved a 100% success rate.

"I am very proud of this result, and I can only congratulate our first graduates licensed to practise medicine", - says Rector Luisa Lambertini - "Hitting a jackpot in these first federal examinations is the culmination of a journey that started a long time ago: I celebrate this achievement knowing that I have to thank those who came before me and laid the foundations for this ambitious project, as well as those who worked with dedication to achieve it."

Prof. Giovanni Pedrazzini, Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at USI, is thrilled about this additional confirmation of the programme's quality: "It is no secret that the Master of Medicine programme at USI is very well-designed, with a rigorous structure and implementation that is highly appreciated by the attending students. The first federal exams have been taken and the students have achieved a 100% success rate. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the impeccable job done by the professors and staff. Their efforts have allowed the students to attain the level of competence required by the Confederation for the preparation of the medical practical exams in just a few years".

Glauco Martinetti, Director General of the EOC, USI's main partner in the training of doctors, also expressed great satisfaction with this result: "I am immensely proud of the contribution made by the EOC towards training the first batch of doctors in Southern Switzerland. Throughout their three-year master's programme, they were provided with ample clinical practice opportunities, which helped them showcase their competence and capability at the patient's bedside. With the federal examination under their belt, they are now deemed ready to take on the challenges that come with their profession."

The celebrations, organised by the graduates who obtained their licence to practice medicine, will be held on Friday, 15 December 2023, at the East Campus Lugano. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the new doctors and thank the team who made the Master in Medicine at USI possible. Media representatives interested in following the celebrations, which will not be open to the public, are invited to register by writing to [email protected]. The detailed programme will follow.
