In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Vincenzo Galvano, Social Media & Newsroom Operations Specialist at Sonova Group in Zurich (CH). USI Degree: Master in Corporate Communication, 2022.
How did you start your career?
I started my career with a traineeship in Corporate Communications at a large company. The position exposed me to various areas within communications and it was a great starting point to apply the learnings from my Master.
Why did you choose a career at Sonova Group?
I aimed to join a reputable Swiss company with global operations. A traineeship in Corporate Communications opened up just as I was completing the final edits of my Master's thesis.
What is your current role/duties?
I currently manage the content calendar and oversee the newsroom for B2B communications.
My role involves managing social media on two levels:
- I facilitate and consult on social media posts, including designing templates and publishing posts accordingly.
- I govern and monitor our social media channels by refining processes, managing the community, aligning and developing the framework in liaison with different representatives from the company's business units, and continuously optimizing our overall social media strategy.
In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Sonova Group?
It's important to be flexible and work agilely when managing multiple projects. Being approachable and engaging with experts from different departments can uncover valuable insights and stories, helping you establish rapport and build an internal network. This network is essential for enhancing your understanding of the business as a communicator. Additionally, managing stakeholder expectations is crucial; understanding their needs and aligning your contributions to meet those expectations is vital for achieving desired objectives.
What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?
I believe that the course and semester structure trajectory was setup optimally while studying at USI. I felt it was carefully designed to first expose you to general areas of business, then to zone in on areas relative to your specific Master including the tools for proper research, thirdly a semester that is customizable to areas of interest and/or the possibility to study abroad, and then finally applying everything into a field project or a master thesis.
What competences and skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?
First and foremost, USI trained me well to handle multiple projects simultaneously, which helped me transition to the real world and prioritize my workload at a steady pace. Also, the programme increased my awareness of the aspects that contribute to corporate culture and identity.
What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?
Three pieces of advice to students entering the job market.
- Hire a professional to assist with your resume/CV; it's worth the investment.
- Grab a copy of the book, 'The Job Closer' by Steve Dalton - it helped me immensely with preparing for job interviews.
- Don't overlook the opportunities that traineeships and internships at established corporations can provide in your field of interest.
If you approached your studies with dedication and apply the same willingness to learn and work hard in these temporary positions, they can lead to full-time employment and serve as an excellent way to enter the field.
