In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Francesco De Simone, Capital Markets Structuring - Corporate Structuring at Intesa Sanpaolo in Milan. USI Degree: Master in Banking and Finance, 2018.

How did you start your career?

I graduated in 2018 from USI Lugano with an MSc in Finance, following a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan. My academic path has always been driven by a strong interest in business and financial markets, leading me to pursue a more quantitative curriculum. I focused on courses such as Applied Numerical Finance, Advanced Derivatives, Fixed Income Advanced Methods, Microstructure of Financial Markets, Trading and Market Microstructure, and Risk Management.

What is your current role/duties?

In 2019, I joined Banca IMI, the Investment Banking division of Intesa Sanpaolo, starting as an intern in the Derivatives Corporate Structuring team. This role introduced me to a wide range of complex transactions with large corporate and project financing clients from day one. Now, as a structurer, my focus is on finding tailored strategies for each client, often involving swaps, options, and other derivatives. The role requires a balance of technical expertise and strong communication skills, as it involves frequent interaction with clients, market counterparties, and collaboration with internal teams like sales, trading, treasury, legal, risk management, and financial engineering.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

During my time at USI, I benefited greatly from a broad selection of advanced courses and an exceptional faculty. The collaborative environment with professors, teaching assistants, and fellow students played a significant role in my academic and professional development.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

To future graduates looking to enter the financial industry, I cannot stress enough the importance of networking with professionals from diverse institutions and roles. Building relationships and connections is invaluable as you carve out your career path.
