In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Pietro Rodolfo Masera, Software Engineer at adesso Schweiz in Lugano. USI Degree: Master of Science in Management and Informatics, 2023.

How did you start your career?

I started at adesso Schweiz as a Software Engineer in 2023 while I was finishing my thesis. I heard about adesso Schweiz through the various events proposed by USI and I got an interview through one of my USI colleagues who was doing an internship at adesso Schweiz.

Why did you choose a career at adesso Schweiz?

I was looking for a challenging environment where I could both learn new things and apply what I learnt during my study at USI.

What is your current role/duties?

My role consists of finding and building software solutions for different customers. In particular, I am focused on delivering business automation solutions based on Pega, Flowable and, more in general, on java.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at adesso Schweiz?

I feel like to be able to be successful at adesso Schweiz you both need good informatics competences and social skills, to be able to find and deliver proper solutions to the clients. Proactiveness is also a crucial aspect to work at adesso Schweiz.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

I was very satisfied by the study programme offered by USI, especially in Computer Science and Informatics courses. I felt both challenged and enlightened by the various professors there, and I had a particular love for the hands-on approach offered by them.

What competences and skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

More than I though they would. Even if offered in separated courses, I had a very good general overview of different technologies and for some of them, really in depth analysis. To mention some of them: SQL and NoSQL databases, advanced java programming, visual analytics, robotics.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Probably something that has been told many times: if you want to pursue a particular career goal, don't worry about rejections, they are natural, just keep on pursuing it and sooner or later everything will come together.
