Lunedì 22 maggio, alle ore 18:00 nell’aula A11 del campus di Lugano, il noto sociologo catalano Manuel Castells terrà una conferenza intitolata “The Crisis of Liberal Democracy: from Brexit to Trump and Beyond”. L’incontro, organizzato in collaborazione tra la Facoltà di scienze della comunicazione dell’USI e la Fondazione internazionale Premio Balzan, intreccerà i temi classici del pensiero del Prof. Castells (la società delle reti, i rapporti tra potere, media e società) con l’attualità della crisi delle democrazie occidentali, confrontate con sfide inedite che ne stanno mettendo in discussione le stesse fondamenta.
 
Manuel Castells, annoverato tra i più importanti sociologi viventi, è professore alla University of Southern California (Annenberg School of Communication) ed è stato insignito nel 2013 del Premio Balzan, per aver proposto una teoria generale sulla nuova società globale dell’informazione, generata dalle tecnologie digitali. Tra le sue opere più conosciute tradotte in italiano, oltre alla trilogia intitolata “L'età dell'informazione” (La nascita della società in rete, Il potere delle identità; Volgere di millennio), figurano "La città delle reti", “Galassia Internet" e “Comunicazione e Potere”. La conferenza avrà luogo in lingua inglese.

On Monday, May 22, at 6pm A11 Lugano campus, USI will host renowned Catalan sociologist Manuel Castells for a conference organised by the USI Faculty of Communication Sciences and the International Balzan Prize Foundation. Professor Castells will discuss

Professor Castells will discuss about network society, and the relationship between authority, the media, and society, in relation to the crisis in Western Democracies that are faced with unprecedented challenges that could undermine their very foundations.

Manuel Castells, considered one of the leading sociologists of our time, is a Professor at the University of Southern California (Annenberg School of Communication) and has been awarded the Balzan Prize in 2013 for proposing a general theory on the new global information society that generated from digital technologies.

Among his most famous works, in addition to the trilogy The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture (Vol. I: The Rise of the Network Society; Vol. II: The Power of Identity; Vol. III: End of Millennium), he is known for The Informational City: Information Technology, Economic Restructuring, and the Urban-Regional Process, The Internet Galaxy, and Communication Power.
