The doctoral program in Applied Linguistics “Argumentation in Professional Practice” will launch in Spetmeber 2017. It is financed by swissuniversites, and offers interdisciplinary research and teaching activities focused on argumentative practices in various communication- and linguistics-related professions (such as journalism, advertising institutional and corporate communication, translation and interpreting).

USI Institute of Argumentation, Linguistics and Semiotics directs and manages the program in collaboration with the School of Applied Linguistics of Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). A national and international network of experts in argumentation in context and applied linguistics is involved in teaching activities and in the scientific committee.

The program fills a gap in doctoral education in Switzerland, as it is addressed to doctoral candidates who do research on linguistic and communication in professional contexts, and in collaboration with practitioners. In this framework, theoretical elaboration and critical thinking directly in contact with the actual needs of the studied professions. The participants to the program can thus on the one hand contribute to the theoretical progress of the disciplines involved, on the other develop best practices that are applicable in the professions.
