Sleep medicine is a rapidly developing branch of medicine. It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, which are estimated to affect up to 30% of the global population. Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is currently hosting the Sleep Medicine Summer School, a continuing education course of international relevance, with about thirty world experts in the field of sleep and which over time has become a genuine reference point for clinical practice and scientific research in the field

The Sleep Medicine Summer School is organised by the European Sleep Foundation (ESF), in joint collaboration with USI and the University of Bern, and is supported by the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC).

The course is now in its fifth edition, the first with the new name (previously known as Alpine Sleep Summer School). 85 students from 20 different countries are attending the course, spending an entire week of study at the Lugano campus (July 1st-5th) and learning the theoretical and practical basics of sleep medicine. The course is directed by neurologists Prof. Claudio Bassetti (University of Bern) and Prof. Mauro Manconi (USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, and University of Bern).

The Sleep Medicine Summer School is part of the wide range of summer schools (short-term programmes, including courses and other training activities focused on specific topics) that USI offers to professionals, doctoral students and university students, on a variety of subjects. An overview of these programmes is available at www.usi.ch/summer-school-2019.
