In 1991, researcher Mark Weiser wrote an article titled "The Computer for the 21st Century," postulating that in the coming century, people will interact with a large number of computers which would become "invisible" because integrated into everyday environments and objects. Today, more than thirty years old, we have calculators embedded in the kitchen refrigerator and oven, in children's toys, in product labels or the clothes themselves. We have digital devices in our purses, in our pockets, on our wrists, on our fingers, in our ears, and on our bodies. All this raises justified concerns and opens up countless possibilities for actively supporting the well-being of individuals and society through information technology.
This month, in the column dedicated to technology in collaboration with La Regione, we hosted Silvia Santini, associate professor at USI Faculty of Informatics, who offered us some food for thought on the risks but also - and above all - on the opportunities of digital applications and devices that are increasingly embedded in our lives.
