In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Barbara Galliker, Head Communications for the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss in Zurich. USI Degree: 4-years degree in Communication Sciences, 2004.

How did you start your career?

After graduating I moved to Zurich and worked in several jobs, including communication agencies, private banks and investor relations agencies.

Why did you choose a career at MeteoSwiss?

The current job gave me the opportunity to generate and strategically position a new communications team oriented on new technology in a rather conservative realm like the government.

What is your current role/duties?

I am Head Communications and responsible for all external and internal communications. Including Social Media and Blogs for a variety of target groups.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at MeteoSwiss?

It's important to have a solid background in communications topics but it's even more important to be assertive, have social skills and flexible.

What are USI’s positive features and qualities?

USI gives students opportunities to develop a broad skill set that will be crucial when working in companies.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

The broad insight in different topics like programming, rhetoric or project management.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

At the beginning change position often and try different specialisations.
