The Scientific Report 2019, published recently, provides an account of the research activities at the Institutes and Departments of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC) and at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) involved in medical research during the year 2019. The new format reflects the increasing integration between research conducted at the two institutions with the creation of the USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and with the signature of a research cooperation agreement in 2020.

EOC provides high-quality care and at the same time is committed to clinical and translational research. This is highlighted in the first part of the 2019 Scientific Report which describes the main research carried out during the year in the EOC's Institutes and Departments and in USI's Institutes active in the medical field. Research is becoming a fundamental part of the activities of health professionals, contributing to improving the quality of patient care. Moreover, substantial competences in public health, health economics and communication are present at USI. The development of a common research strategy between EOC and USI is expected to reinforce the research activities in several medical disciplines and to increase synergies with related fields.

As in previous years, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the scientific publications recorded in the PubMed/MEDLINE database is presented in the 2019 Scientific Report. In 2019, 360 articles were published in international scientific journals, almost half of them in the highest-ranked journals. The level of scientific collaboration (mainly national and international) and the contribution of researchers as first or last author of a publication attest the high quality of scientific production in 2019. These findings are similar compared to those reported in the previous year.

Among the most prolific EOC Institutes and Departments in terms of the number of scientific publications are the Oncology Institute, the Neurocenter and the Imaging Institute of Southern Switzerland. However, it is important to note that all the different departments and clinical fields present at EOC, although to different degrees, have participated in research activities.
