In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Matilde Frigerio, Team Leader Brand Management Bodywear & Hosiery Woman for Hugo Boss in Coldrerio (CH). USI Degrees: Master in Management, 2015 and Bachelor in Communication Sciences, 2013.

How did you start your career?

Before graduating, I was looking into job opportunities on the USI job offer portal and I found an Internship position within the Bodywear & Hosiery Brand Management Team at HUGO BOSS Ticino SA.

Why did you choose a career in Hugo Boss?

I always dreamt to work for an important fashion company, as I was attracted by the dynamism, creativity and internationality characteristics of the fashion industry. HUGO BOSS was for me the best choice as I could really learn what it means to work for an international fashion company, that is willing to invest in young and motivated people.

What is your current role/duties?

I am currently managing the Brand Management Woman team in charge of taking care of the successful launch and development of the BOSS and HUGO Bodywear and Hosiery Woman business. We are the main interface to the sales people selling our collection around the world (both retail and wholesale), as well as the key reference to our interfaces within the Bodywear & Hosiery business unit: designers, product developers, operations, sustainability experts, quality management, etc. We take care of product management, marketing and merchandising at 360 degrees.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in Hugo Boss?

Key qualities to be successful at HUGO BOSS are: ability to embrace to new challenges and react in a fast way, being open minded, proactivity and creativity, willingness to make the impossible possible, being a team player and resilience.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

During my Bachelor in Communication Sciences with major in Corporate Communication I could really have a great introduction to what I chose as a Master degree: Management. These two combined choices created the best base for me to orientate in the job world. I had a strong theoretical foundation about marketing, communication and the dynamics happening within a real company.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

At USI I learnt what it means to perform under pressure, as the exam sessions were tough if you were aiming to achieve the best results! I had the opportunity to work on so many group projects that taught me how to deal with different international teams and to present in front of a big audience. I learnt how to build a strong network and to get the best out of it. All these learnings are useful in my everyday work life.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

My advice is to set yourself a roadmap: where you want to go, what do you need to get there, where do you expect to be in terms of career development in five years. Challenge yourself and constantly monitor where you are, how your learning curve is developing and if you are happy with it. A successful career requires determination, motivation and a strong network.
Be humble and a team player, learn from others as much as you can and be proactive. Opportunities will come naturally.
