Dark Tourism is the journey to places linked to tragedy, natural disasters, and more widely to death. Auschwitz of course, but also battlefields, prisons, cemeteries. In recent years Dark Tourism has attracted scholarly attention for several reasons. First, the number of practitioners is growing, as is media interest. Moreover, Dark Tourism, in its various forms and nuances, challenges our usual idea of tourism as a pleasant, light activity (Leisure). Finally, its management continually raises delicate and complex ethical questions: for example, is it possible to be a tourist in a concentration camp?

Philip Stone (University of Central Lancashire - UCLan), among the world's leading experts in this field, director of the prestigious Institute for Dark Tourism Research and coordinator of the leading scientific journal in the field (International Journal of Dark Tourism Studies).
The event is organized by USI Master in International Tourism and USI UNESCO Chair in Information and Communication Technologies to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage sites.
