USI is the 32nd best young university in the world according to Times Higher Education ranking

Let's talk about academic rankings again: the new edition of the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, published today, sees Università della Svizzera italiana in 32nd place globally, gaining 25 positions compared to last year. "This is a very significant result for USI, because it measures us against more than 600 universities less than 50 years old, showing that we are definitely on the right track", says Rector Luisa Lambertini.

The Young University Rankings is a ranking specifically for young universities and is derived from the same data as the overall ranking. The methodology is similar to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings to assess universities in all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. However, the importance of the various indicators is adjusted to best reflect the profile and mission of young universities under 50 years of age by focusing on universities that, due to their young age, may not yet have an established reputation such as, for example, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Princeton.

This result comes just a few days after the results of the QS World University Rankings, lowing an update of the evaluation procedure, saw several Swiss universities, including USI, fall behind.

The results may vary between different rankings because there are differences in the indicators used and their relative importance in the ranking calculation. University rankings are in fact based on standardised data collection procedures that measure various indicators, with the aim of making comparisons on the quality and performance of universities. Rankings are compiled annually based on the analysis of a very large amount of data. Indicators are drawn up from these, such as bibliometric data (citations and references in scientific publications), the impact of the research carried out by universities, the quality of teaching and the international perspective.

Although Università della Svizzera italiana has achieved significant positions in recent years, especially in relation to its age and size, it urges that the results of these rankings be treated with caution, as only one of the pieces that show the quality of a university.
