Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are both PhD and post-graduate researchers in any discipline who hold a master’s degree as a minimum. They are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) also knowns as ESKAS.

Candidates are selected based on three main criteria:

  • Candidate’s academic profile, research capacity and motivation
  • Quality of their research project (originality and methodological soundness)
  • Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS will select scholarship holders for the 2019-20 academic year by the end of May 2019. Scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year will be advertised from August 2019. The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

Prof. Michael Gibbert is the USI Delegate for the Government Excellence Scholarships. Along with Arianna Imberti Dosi, they are the point of contact at USI if you wish to receive more information about these opportunities.
