A greeting from the Pro-Rector:

Fabio Crestani

Fabio Crestani

Pro-rector for Internationalisation

Knowledge transcends borders, being universal and inherently international. Throughout history, the mobility of professors and students has been a fundamental aspect of academic life, dating back to the founding of the first universities and expanding globally. Advances in transportation and increasing household wealth have significantly fostered this trend, making international experiences more accessible than ever.

Participating in international education broadens the understanding of different cultures, breaks down ethnic stereotypes, and opens new perspectives. It enriches the spirit, expands the mind, increases tolerance for diversity, sharpens attention to detail, and highlights what truly matters. Individuals exposed to different cultural environments are more adaptable, communicate more effectively in professional settings, and are better prepared for today’s global job market. Moreover, the friendships and enjoyment that come with international experiences are priceless.

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) was founded with the aim of becoming an international hub for learning and research. Today, USI is home to a diverse community of students and faculty from over one hundred countries, reflecting its commitment to internationalization. This diversity not only enhances the educational experience but also strengthens USI’s position in global academic rankings. Furthermore, USI actively collaborates with numerous international, national, and regional partner universities in education, research, and knowledge-sharing.

In particular, USI offers its students a wide variety of exchange opportunities, ranging from traditional study abroad and structured exchange programmes to double and joint degree programmes with some of the world’s leading universities. The International Relations Service is also dedicated to developing new programmes, welcoming foreign delegations, contributing to debates on the future of universities by participating in interest groups and industry conferences, creating initiatives for intercultural skill development and promotion, and supporting students in making the most of various exchange opportunities.

Below are some key figures regarding USI’s internationalization:

  • Pro-Rectorate for Internationalisation

USI has established Pro-Rectorates in strategically important areas that require particular attention and dedicated resources. The Pro-Rectorate for Internationalisation is entrusted with managing and planning USI’s internationalization in line with the University’s strategic objectives. It operates on the conviction that international academic cooperation can actively contribute to the protection of peoples, the defense of human rights, and the promotion of peace.

Since March 18, 2024, the role of Pro-Rector has been held by Prof. Fabio Crestani.

The strategic objectives for the 2025–2028 period are described here: https://www.usi.ch/en/university/info/relint/international-relations/internationalization-strategy-goals

This innovative type of agreement allows students enrolled in a four-year bachelor’s program at their home university to spend one semester at USI, attending selected courses from a specific master’s program. They then return to their home university to complete their bachelor’s degree. Thanks to this agreement, they can subsequently apply to the full master’s program at USI and complete it in one year (two semesters) instead of two, as the courses taken during their mobility will be recognized.
