Support for the centennial of the Swiss Student Union

The Student Council, at its meeting of 7 April 2020, has decided – in the name of the Corporation itself – to support the centennial of the Swiss Student Union (VSS-UNES-USU) with the amount of CHF 1000. The VSS-UNES-USU “represents students of universities, universities of applied sciences, pedagogical universities and Swiss federal institutes of technology on the national level”. Its objective "is the representation of students' and students' interests at national and international level". In 2020, all things permitted, it will organise a series of events for the 100th anniversary of his founding, ending with a ceremony in Zurich in November 2020. The financial support is granted to help cover the organisation's expenses in its capacity as "silver sponsor" and also to raise awareness about the existence of the University in the rest of Switzerland. The Student Council supports this project based on its objective of fostering dialogue, connections and synergies between the student community of USI and that of other Swiss universities.

Details of the Decision
One of the objectives of the Corporation is to give voice to and encourage cohesion among students. A strong connection with the student organizations of other universities, in particular those who partner with USI, is key to sharing experiences and collecting ideas and examples useful to intensify the involvement and relevance of students in university life at USI as well. Fostering exchange with other Swiss universities also offers all students potential networking opportunities. The Student Council believes that supporting the centennial of the VSS-UNES-USI is an investment in what remains the main platform for contact and coordination between university student organizations in Switzerland and therefore an investment in the positive effects that networking at the national level will have for the USI student community. The support will also contribute, thanks to a presence on the event website and invitation, to raise awareness of the existence of the University in the rest of Switzerland.

Decision procedure
The Decision was taken by the Student Council unanimously with regards to the principle and by majority with regards to the amount.

Deadline for Student Referendum
The deadline to launch a Student Referendum against this Decision is April 23, 2020.
