Every October marks "Pink October", the month dedicated to breast cancer prevention. "Pink October" is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis, scientific research, and support for people affected by this disease.
In Switzerland, approximately 6,550 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, of which 6,500 affect women and 50 men. The majority of diagnoses, around 80%, occur in women aged 50 or older, confirming that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women (source: Ufficio federale di statistica). These figures highlight the critical importance of prevention, early detection, and regular screenings.
Early diagnosis is one of the most effective tools to improve the chances of recovery and to allow for less aggressive therapies with fewer side effects. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the chances of survival and of maintaining a good quality of life.
For this reason, the Ufficio federale della sanità pubblica (UFSP), together with the Lega svizzera contro il cancro and the cantonal screening programs, is committed to providing up-to-date information, prevention materials, and useful resources to encourage the population to undergo regular recommended check-ups.
Below and in the attached materials, you will find informational resources and practical tools to explore the topic further and to contribute—through knowledge—to the fight against breast cancer.
