Here the story of Elena Guggiari, Junior Researcher at Careum School of Health in Zurich. USI Degrees: Master in Communication, Management and Health, 2015 and Bachelor in Communication, 2013.

How did you start your career?

During my studies at USI, I had the opportunity to work as student assistant for the Institute of Communication and Health (ICH), where I got more familiar with topics like health literacy and patient empowerment. After graduating, I started a 1-year internship at Careum School of Health, working with a research team focusing on patient empowerment. After the internship I continued working for Careum School of Health as Junior Researcher.

Why did you choose a career at Careum School of Health?

I decided to do an intership in another Canton in order to work in a new context and to improve my language skills. I found Careum School of Health  particularly appealing because they conduct innovative and interdisciplinary research, focusing on patient empowerment, but also on the health and well-being of family caregivers.

What is your current role/duties?

I'm currently Junior researcher in a European project with the aim of improving the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents who are caring for an ill family member. Besides research activities, like conducting interviews and surveys, I'm also working in the communication and publications of research findings.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Careum School of Health?

Being flexible, determined and creative. Teamwork is an essential skill, as well.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

I particularly appreciated that USI is on a human scale and that it is international. Moreover, I think that after a Master at USI, students are well prepared for starting their career. I also appreciated the several group activities, which improve students' self-organisation and teamwork skills.

What competences and/or skills acquired during your USI study programme have been useful/are useful in your professional career?

During my studies at USI, I learned to work in team and to think creatively in order to find a solution in complex projects. Moreover, I learned to make good presentations and to speak in public. These are skills that are very useful in my professional daily life.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

To be flexible and not to give up if the job search is more difficult than expected. Moreover, an internship in another Country or Canton can open up new perspectives and make the curriculum more appealing.
