In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Anica Ilic, PhD student at the Universität Luzern in Lucerne (CH). USI Degree: Master in Communication, Management and Health, 2017.

How did you start your career?

During my master studies I had the opportunity to get familiar with the academic world through an internship at the Institute of Communication and Health (ICH) at USI. I appreciated that experience very much and developed a strong interest in doing research. Thus, after graduating, I started working at the ICH as a research assistant.

Why did you choose a career at the Universität Luzern?

I wanted to complete my studies with a PhD in a different university in order to open up new perspectives. At the University of Lucerne I found an interdisciplinary team with expertise in numerous areas, which promotes knowledge exchange.

What is your current role/duties?

As a PhD candidate in the Department of Health Sciences and Medicine, I collaborate in the team of Prof. Dr. Gisela Michel on a nationwide projecton grandparents’ support and experiences when their grandchildren get a cancer diagnosis. Besides that, I have the chance to teach, attend courses that allow me to advance my research skills and participate at international conferences.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at the Universität Luzern?

Being determined, inventive and scrupulous.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

International students and dedication of lecturers.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Through my studies at USI I learned to work in a team on complex projects and handle stress during difficult times.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Don’t be afraid to fail and keep believing in your capabilities!
