In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of David Liberati, Sr. Digital Communications Consultant for Ecorys in Birmingham (UK). USI Degree: Master in Marketing, 2012

How did you start your career?

After graduating at USI in 2012, I moved to the UK, where I got a 3- month internship with a Loyalty Marketing Agency based in the City of London. After that, I worked as a marketing & events coordinator for a tech startup.

Why did you choose a career at Ecorys?

I chose Ecorys because of their commitment on having a positive impact on society via their unique policy, research and communication projects.

What is your current role/duties?

My role involves managing the creation and delivery of multi-channel digital communication campaigns on behalf of big European public institutions, such as the European Commission and the European Parliament. Within these projects, I manage everything that is digital, from social media to email campaigns, from advertising to influencers, from web articles to content marketing.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in Ecorys?

In my view, the key qualities a graduate should have to start a professional journey at Ecorys are: teamwork spirit, positive attitude and an inner desire to learn and develop. You are never 'done' in the Digital sector, there is always something new to learn!

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

I chose USI because of his small-size classrooms, his industry professionals teachers and especially, the practical, hands-on teaching approach: every course I attended included one or more group projects, including a presentation in front of the class. This aspects, coupled with great facilities and very good services, made my experience at USI a fantastic one! Looking back, I can say I am very pleased with my choice!

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Teamwork, presentation skills, multi-cultural awareness, creativity, problem-solving, negotiation.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

My suggestion would be to get any chance they got to make experience in their own sector, even if is starting from a simple internship. Then, decide where you want to get and make sure you acquire all the necessary experience, skills and qualifications to get there. Don't forget that USI may not be known outside Switzerland, so make sure you are highlighting in your CV the transferrable skills and practical tasks you did as part of your studies, e.g. the group project. Finally, keep developing yourself, learning, studying, as these will be your career accelerators!
