To help current students and recent graduates navigate the world of work, several USI Alumni shared their career paths and career story. Here the story of Catalina Aliste, Data Architect at LATAM Airlines in Santiago (Chile). USI Degree: Master in Management and Informatics, 2023.

How did you start your career?

I began my career as a technology consultant before pursuing my master’s degree. Wanting to change my role and enhance my skills, I decided to enroll in the program. After completing the master’s, I returned to Chile and discovered a job posting on LinkedIn for a position in my dream industry. The application process lasted three months and involved various skill assessments and interviews. Ultimately, I secured the job.

Why did you choose a career at LATAM Airlines?

I have always been drawn to big challenges, complex industries, and opportunities for travel, which made this sector a perfect fit for me. This airline, in particular, is the largest in Latin America and is highly regarded among tech professionals in Chile due to its substantial investment in technology and employee training.

What is your current role/duties?

I work as a Data Architect, where I’m responsible for designing end-to-end data solutions, from extraction to visualization. This role requires expertise in a wide range of data technologies, such as databases, communication models, and data integration methods. My goal is to seamlessly connect these technologies to transform raw data into valuable, actionable insights.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career LATAM Airlines?

Problem-solving, effective communication, and possessing in-depth technological knowledge. Also, it is critical to be able to evaluate existing solutions, identify opportunities for improvement, and bridge the gap between business requirements and technological capabilities.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

The exceptional professors, the high-quality materials they provided, and the direct, accessible communication made the experience invaluable. Additionally, the flexibility to choose classes aligned with my career goals was a significant advantage. Also, learning alongside talented and supportive classmates made the process both enjoyable and enriching.

What competences and skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

The ability to approach complex problems with patience and a structured methodology, as well as the skill to communicate solutions effectively to a diverse audience, including both technical and non-technical professionals, has been immensely valuable in my professional career.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

My advice to USI students entering the job market is to remain curious and proactive, continuously integrating everything you learn and experience into your work. Cultivate resilience to frustration, as every industry has its complexities. Stay calm, take things step by step, and remember to document everything from day one. And the most important thing, never stop learning!
