To help current students and recent graduates navigate the world of work, several USI Alumni shared their career paths and career story. Here the story of Lorenzo La Rocca, Outside Sales Specialist at Veo Technologies in Copenhagen (DK). USI Degree: Bachelor in Communication, 2018.

How did you start your career?

During my time at Copenhagen Business School, I began familiarizing myself with the Danish market by attending various fairs and volunteering at startup events. After graduating, I actively explored job opportunities on LinkedIn and other platforms, which eventually led to several interviews. One day, while biking through the city, I noticed a large billboard on a shopping mall for a Danish company that manufactures safety shoes. Interested, I decided to take a different approach: I sent a straightforward LinkedIn message to the CEO, requesting a quick chat to explore mutual interests. Fortunately, the timing was right, and after our conversation, I received a job offer to start within two weeks.

Why did you choose a career at Veo Technologies?

There are several reasons why I chose to pursue a career at VEO. First and foremost, I have always been passionate about the sports industry, so this opportunity aligns perfectly with my personal interests. Additionally, I was drawn to VEO's mission to democratize technology in team sports, which I found highly motivating and inspiring.

Lastly, the company culture and work environment played a significant role in my decision. VEO strikes me as a young, dynamic, and inclusive company where people are genuinely valued and encouraged to thrive, which I believe is essential for maintaining both happiness and productivity at work.

What is your current role/duties?

I am currently a Sales Specialist at VEO, where I manage both inbound and outbound sales activities for the Italian market. The inbound sales activity involves responding to potential customers who have already expressed interest in our products or services, where provide relevant information and I guide them toward a purchase decision. On the other hand, the outbound sales activity is more proactive as it involves reaching out to potential clients who have not yet engaged with our company. This could be through cold calling or emailing and the goal is to build relationships and create opportunities to expand our market presence.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in Veo Technologies?

I believe there are three qualities that are highly valued at my company:

  1. Adaptability is essential, as being flexible and responsive to change is crucial for thriving in the dynamic environment typical of startups.
  2. Proactivity and a can-do attitude are also critical for addressing challenges and driving the company’s growth.
  3. Lastly, a customer-centric mindset is vital. This involves understanding and prioritizing the needs of clients and end-users, ensuring that VEO’s solutions provide genuine value and enhance customer satisfaction.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

I would emphasize the importance of teamwork, as it is likely to be a key aspect of your future role. Effective collaboration is essential to ensuring that everyone is aligned and working towards achieving the company's goals.

What competences and skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

Two skills I am grateful to USI for are being structured and meeting deadlines. These qualities are highly valued in any work environment, as they picture you as a diligent and reliable individual.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Don’t feel discouraged or overwhelmed; it’s normal for the journey to take time. You may not land your dream job right away, but that’s all part of the learning process. Embrace the opportunities that come your way, take risks, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—many of them! Remember, there are people less qualified than you who are pursuing the careers you aspire to, simply because they believed in themselves. Trust in your abilities and stay persistent.
