In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Federico Ghilotti, Jr. Internal Auditor at PKB Private Bank in Lugano (CH). USI Degree: Master in Finance, 2021.

How did you start your career?

I have worked for nearly two years at an IT consulting company, where I had the opportunity to engage with various sectors, including banking (for one year), industrial, and transportation. During this time, I focused on the business aspect of implementing audit tools, contributing to the integration and optimization of auditing processes across different industries. Subsequently, I made the decision to transition to a more hands-on role by joining a PKB Private Bank as an Internal Auditor. This position allowed me to conduct an in-depth exploration of the banking sector, where I have been working for the past year.

Why did you choose a career at PKB Private Bank?

I made the decision to join PKB Private Bank because the company is known for being a solid and client-oriented organization. Its modest size is undoubtedly an asset, as it fosters individual growth both in terms of career development and the enhancement of soft skills. Working in such an environment allows direct interaction with office managers and C-level executives on a daily basis, which provides valuable exposure and insight into the organization’s operations at the highest levels.
Additionally, the role of Internal Auditor offers a comprehensive perspective on the core functions of a private bank and the banking sector in general. This position allows me to gain a holistic understanding of the institution's activities, risk management practices, and regulatory compliance, further enriching my professional experience and knowledge in the financial services industry.

What is your current role/duties?

In my role within the Internal Audit department, I am responsible for conducting audits at both the bank and group level. I support the Head of the Audit function in preparing Audit reports, as well as in drafting documentation for relevant committees. Additionally, I am involved in managing special assignments and other tasks as delegated to the Audit function. This position provides a comprehensive view of the bank's operations, with a specific focus on risk management, both regulatory and non-regulatory, and the methods used to address and mitigate these risks.
As an Internal Auditor, my responsibilities allow me to gain insight into various aspects of the bank, from its financial operations to its compliance with regulatory frameworks. I work closely with senior management to ensure that risks are effectively identified, assessed, and managed, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the bank's integrity and long-term stability.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at PKB Private Bank?

In my opinion, advancing in my role requires a strong understanding of banking processes to easily identify associated risks. Equally important is the development of soft skills, which enable effective collaboration with colleagues and ensure smooth audit interventions. Lastly, staying current with both existing and upcoming regulations is essential to align audits with industry standards and maintain compliance in a constantly evolving financial landscape.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

The Master’s in Banking and Finance provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the financial landscape, equipping me with a solid foundation in key financial concepts and industry practices. Through detailed case studies, including real-world banking scenarios, I gained valuable insights into the complexities of the banking sector and its various operational and regulatory challenges. In addition to the academic knowledge, the program facilitated close, oneon-one interactions with professors and assistant professors, allowing for a more personalized learning experience. This direct engagement not only enhanced my understanding of the subject matter but also provided the opportunity to discuss complex topics in greater depth, further enriching my educational experience.
