Research databases and subscriptions

In the spirit of good data management practices, the Research Data Manager takes care of databases owned by USI and encourages their dissemination and use within USI, in order to facilitate opportunities of data reuse and collaboration between USI researchers in a multi-disciplinary framework.

The Research Data Manager also supports the research community in the process of obtaining, organizing and managing research data during research projects and in a long-term perspective.

Catalogue of resources

This page contains a catalogue of research data collections, subscriptions and related services dedicated to USI researchers and students. The catalogue is categorized on a broad disciplinary basis.

These resources can be accessed online, some of them may require the creation of a user profile. In general, the resources are available to the whole USI community unless specified.

  • Economics, finance and management

    Bloomberg Terminal

    Content: Bloomberg Terminal is a display service delivering data for viewing on a screen. USI subscribers can also get Bloomberg certifications from attending specific courses

    Available products: Bloomberg physical terminals and the possibility of obtaining 3 different certifications, such as: Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals (BFF), Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG)

    Access conditions: USI users are eligible to access the Bloomberg terminals and the Desktop API. Authenticated subscribers can log into the Terminal via the installations deployed in the Bloomberg Lab (SI-007 - black building). Please contact the Research Data Manager to gain access to the resources

     

    Business Source Premier

    Content: Business Source Premier is an online research database that provides access to a wide range of business and management literature and documentation

    Available products: market research reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analysis, as well as full access to scientific journals in the fields of marketing, management, accounting, and finance.

    Compustat

    Content: Compustat is a financial, statistical, and market information database on active and inactive global companies throughout the world

    Available products: Compustat North America, Compustat Global, Executive Compensation (ExecuComp data), Compustat Snapshot, Compustat Bank

    Access conditions: this content can be accessed via the institutional subscription to WRDS. Faculty, students, and staff who require access must register for a WRDS account

     

    CRSP

    Content: information on market and corporate securities, indexes, mutual funds, treasuries

    Available products: US Stock database, US Treasury database, Survivor-Bias-Free US Mutual Funds database

    Access conditions: this content can be accessed via the institutional subscription to WRDS. Faculty, students, and staff who require access must register for a WRDS account

     

    Factiva

    Content: Factiva provides access to a wide range of global news, business, and industry information from thousands of sources; including newspapers, newswires, journals, websites, and social media platoforms

    Available products: content aggregations, search and retrieval, alerts and monitoring, company and industry data

    FACTSET

    Content: FactSet provides economic and financial data, including ESG, fixed income, commodities, futures, including company and industry analyses and real-time news.

    Available products: USI subscribes to the FactSet Academic package, as well as Ownership, Debt Capital Structure and Equity Prices

    Access conditions: USI users are eligible to access to FactSet Academic Solution (the institutional email address must be used).
    Bachelor and Master students have to sign up as "STUDENT", all faculty members have to sign up as "PROFESSOR". Faculty members have access to DataFeed solutions too (please contact the Research Data Manager to gain access to the resources)

     

    HISTORIC BUSINESS

    Content: Historic Business from Data Axle refers to a dataset that provides information about US historical business data from 1997 to 2022 (2023 data should be available soon)

    Available products: company names, addresses, contact information, industry classifications, sales volume, and other relevant data points

    Access conditions: this content can be accessed via the institutional subscription to WRDS (Data Dashboard -> Third Party -> Infogroup). Faculty, students, and staff who require access must register for a WRDS account

     

    ICPSR

    Content: the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research is an international consortium maintaining a data archive dedicated to social and behavioral sciences

    Available products: specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields. The complete collection of resources can be found here

    IMD World Competitiveness Online

    Content: The IMD World Competitiveness Center publishes an annual World Competitiveness Report that assesses the competitiveness of nations based on a wide range of factors, including economic performance, government and business efficency, infrastructure, and innovation

    OECD iLibrary

    Content: The OECD iLibrary is an online platform that provides access to a wide range of publications, statistics, and data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

    Available products: OECD statistics as well as reports, studies, policy papers, and books covering a wide array of topics (economics, trade, education, environment, health, and more)

    Orbis

    Content: Orbis is a global database of companies and financial information. It is widely used by businesses, financial institutions, and researchers to collect information about companies and to conduct financial analysis. It’s updated weekly

    OptionMetrics (IvyDB US)

    Content: the Ivy DB database (often referred to as OptionMetrics) is a comprehensive database of historical prices, implied volatility, and sensitivity information (greeks) for the entire US listed index and equity options markets

    PrivCo

    Content: PrivCo stands for Private Company Financial Intelligence and it’s a financial data and business research platform specialized in providing information and analysis on privately held companies. It’s updated daily

    WRDS

    Content: Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) provides an interface to financial and economic time-series data. WRDS data are compiled from independent sources that specialise in specific historical data

    Available products: the complete collection of subscriptions available to USI users can be found here (it requires authentication form an existing account)

    Access conditions: USI faculty, students, and staff who require access must register a WRDS account (the institutional email address must be used and "University of Lugano" must be selected under the "Subscriber" field).     Art Museum Image Gallery (AMIG)

    Content: AMIG is a rich digital platform of art images and related multimedia brought together from the collections of distinguished museums around the world

    Available products: over 165'000 art images covering a broad range of time and collections of museum from all around the world (Louvre, Prado, British Museum, and more)
