Partire, scoprire, crescere: riflessioni di chi ha vissuto un'esperienza di scambio

Un periodo di studio all’estero è molto più di un semplice spostamento geografico: è un viaggio che inizia ben prima della partenza e continua anche dopo il rientro. Ogni studente e studentessa che sceglie di partire porta con sé aspettative, timori e sogni, per poi tornare con nuove consapevolezze, ricordi indelebili e, spesso, una prospettiva trasformata.

I rapporti di fine soggiorno racchiudono le testimonianze di chi ha vissuto questa esperienza in prima persona nel semestre autunnale 2024-25. Cosa li ha spinti a partire? Quali sfide hanno affrontato e quali sorprese hanno trovato lungo il loro cammino? Come sono cambiate le loro percezioni – di sé stessi, della propria cultura e del mondo?

Attraverso una selezione di citazioni e riflessioni autentiche desideriamo offrire uno sguardo sincero sulle molteplici sfaccettature della mobilità internazionale: dagli aspetti pratici a quelli più personali, legati alla crescita e alla scoperta.

Un racconto collettivo che, oltre a celebrare le esperienze vissute, potrà essere una bussola per chi sogna di intraprendere lo stesso percorso.

Le citazioni sono nella lingua in cui ci sono pervenute. Il Servizio si è limitato a correggere eventuali refusi.

La domanda con cui si apre il questionario “What is the main factor that motivated you to go abroad?” non lascia spazio a dubbi. Le due motivazioni predominanti sono “Personal development” (36%) e "Build an international experience” (28%), a conferma del fatto che un’esperienza di mobilità viene sì percepita come un arricchimento del proprio curriculum vitae, ma, soprattutto, come un’opportunità di crescita e di sviluppo personali.

Una retrospettiva proprio su quest’ultimo tema ci arriva con la domanda “If you look at your "old" self from 6 months ago, what has changed?”. Nelle risposte ricorrono infatti termini come “autonomia", "indipendenza", "consapevolezza", "crescita", "adattabilità" e "sicurezza in sé stessi”.

• “Looking back at my old self from six months ago, I can see how much I’ve grown in terms of confidence, adaptability, and perspective. I’ve become more open-minded and curious, and pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone. Living in a city like Hong Kong, with diverse culture, has made me more independent. I’ve also become better at navigating unfamiliar situations, whether that’s figuring out public transportation or learning how to communicate in a new language. Overall, I feel more resilient and self-aware than before, with a deeper understanding of the world and my place in it.” (mobilità presso Hong Kong Baptist University, HK)

• “Looking at my "old" self from six months ago, I see a transformation that goes beyond just academic and professional growth. Initially, I never considered visiting or exploring Asia, but my time in Singapore completely changed that. I became enamored with the culture, the people, and, of course, the food. This experience has expanded my horizons, showing me that what I thought I knew about the world was just the beginning. The three words I would use to describe my exchange experience are: "Home, Heart, Growth". "Home" reflects the comfort and sense of belonging I found in Singapore, a place that quickly felt like my own. "Heart" captures the deep emotional connections I formed with people from around the world, learning about diverse cultures and experiences. And "Growth" embodies how I have evolved into a more confident, globally aware individual, both personally and academically. I’ve gained a greater appreciation for international perspectives and developed the skills to adapt to a new environment, all while being open to new ideas and possibilities. Se, da un lato, l’esito di un programma di scambio porta all’identificazione di elementi comuni, è interessante notare come dall’altro la spinta ha origini e motivazioni molto diverse: dal desiderio di andare lontano per confrontarsi con una cultura completamente diversa dalla nostra al prestigio e all’offerta formativa dell’università; dall’attrazione verso una grande città alla voglia di scoprire il modello educativo dei paesi nordici; dal voler approfondire una lingua straniera alla familiarità di un luogo che già si conosce, e molto altro ancora.

La redazione del rapporto di fine soggiorno ha anche permesso alle studentesse e agli studenti di riflettere su tematiche quali i cliché, i preconcetti, gli elementi inaspettati e anche le paure e i timori. E sebbene ogni individuo sia unico e ogni esperienza di scambio diversa, notiamo con piacere che il 100% delle studentesse e degli studenti consiglia senza nessuna esitazione una tale esperienza all’interno del proprio ciclo di studi.
