Research support

This section of the website is dedicated to Research Support and provides USI researchers with:

  • Information on all open calls for research projects and information events;
  • Specific information on each funding programme for PhD students, postdocs and experienced researchers;
  • Support for the preparation of applications;
  • Support and advice to write a Data Management Plan;
  • Research project administration;
  • Technology transfer activities.

This information and support is provided by the Research and Transfer Service of USI (Università della Svizzera italiana), whose mission is to support USI researchers in their scientific activities.

The service hosts the regional Euresearch office, a non-profit organisation funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) which promotes and facilitates the participation of researchers, organisations and companies in European R&I projects and programmes.

Focus of the week:

USI Support to doctoral mobility

Deadline: 8 January, 2024
USI provides support to doctoral students matriculated at the Università della Svizzera italiana who wish to improve their scientific profile by going abroad for a stay of 6-12 months during the PhD.
Financial support covers the additional costs for staying abroad, such as travel and living costs as well as fees for conferences and workshops of up to CHF 20'000. It is not meant to replace the PhD salary.

SNSF Advanced Grants 2023

Deadline: 31 January, 2024
On behalf of the federal government, the SNSF has launched the SNSF Advanced Grants 2023 call, replacing the ERC Advanced Grants.
SNSF Advanced Grants are aimed at established researchers with an outstanding track-record over the last 10 years. It is open to researchers of any nationality from any discipline and topic.
Advanced grants fund bottom-up, high-risk/high-gain projects conducted in Switzerland.
Eligibility
The host institution must be established in Switzerland as a legal entity (public or private). Higher education institutions or non-commercial research institutions in Switzerland are eligible. The host institution must commit to employing the applicant for at least the project's duration, even after reaching the retirement age if applicable. The applicant's employment at a Swiss research institution must be at least 50% of their working time.
Funding and Duration
The budget can be up to CHF 1.9 million for a period of up to 5 years. Additional funding of up to CHF 870’000 may be requested for a) costs in connection with the move to Switzerland; b) the acquisition or use of scientific infrastructure/major equipment; c) other major experimental and field work costs, excluding personnel costs.
