In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Maria Formicola, Corporate Treasury Resolution and Recovery Liquidity Financial Analytics in J.P. Morgan in New York (US). USI Degree: Master in Banking and Finance, 2015.

How did you start your career?

I started my career as a consultant in finance and risk for the banking institutions at the beginning in Germany then in Italy. I was mainly involved in projects related to Interest rate risk and liquidity risk. Then I moved to Luxembourg working for an investment banking bank on Recovery and resolution. Actually, I am working for the same bank based in New York as Liquidity Treasurer.

Why did you choose a career in J.P. Morgan?

I really like the culture of the company (Corporate responsibility, diversity and inclusion, equity promotion for women) and the support for the career development/mobility.

What is your current role/duties?

I am responsible for delivering the liquidity analyses for the firms's Resolution and Recovery plan. I conduct specific Resolution and Recovery liquidity stress testing, analyze liquidity impacts and identify potential liquidity risks.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career in J.P. Morgan?

Very strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, strong communication, ability to operate in fast-paced environment with various stakeholder, strong experience in programming.

What competences and/or skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?

I've developed strong analytical and quantitative skills through high mathematical and statistical courses. Nevertheless, companies' evaluation has been the main topic of three of my better resulting courses, in Accounting, Corporate Finance and Financial Statement Analysis, and these studies have proved to be fundamental. In fact, analyzing financial statements, finding the right information and being able to say which one was important and which one was not, used to be one of my main duties.

On the other hand, knowing the foundations of the Financial Mathematics have been very useful when I was asked to prepare some basic models in Statistical Program, such as liquidity analysis or combination models. Studying Derivatives, Financial Instruments and Capital Markets I have also learned the fundamental elements, processes and instruments in credit business and the tools that financial analysts use to make investment decisions.

An international experience, give you an advantage! Mobility and networking!
